Kuhiya & Vadaiya (trans: Good news and in between)

Authors Note

Sorry this is so late. I had it scheduled and I don't know why it didn't post at 7am like it was supposed to. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone!

~Rory

As time went on we all suddenly realized we were only a couple months away from graduating. The first reaction was almost a nervous panicky feeling. Life as we knew it was ending and we were all becoming adults and starting our own lives. But right along the feelings of panic was the naked excitement and happiness. Everyone was exited to take those first big steps towards their futures.

When prom came up, we all decided to do it big; limos, professional makeup and hair, nice dinner and a party afterwards. As we were looking for dresses, Merry and I decided to go to Los Angeles to find dresses that we knew no one else would have. Kallie found out and asked if she could come with us because she wanted to get something that would blow Kevin’s mind. Before the end of the day, we had a total of 5 girls who wanted to go. We figured out that we wanted to go this coming weekend and make it a day trip since it was an hour drive. Merry, Kallie, Jamie, Alicia and I decided that we would all ask our parents and then text the others to let them know. I knew that the only one who would probably have trouble getting permission would be me, so I decided to ask my mom as soon as I got home.

“Hey, Shorty” someone said as I walked in the door. I looked up and saw Jack standing there, grinning.

“Oh my God” I nearly squealed and ran to give him a hug “what are you doing here? Why aren’t you in Berkeley? Did I know you were coming?”

With his arms still around me, he laughed and said “No you didn’t know I was coming. I found out that I wasn’t working this weekend and didn’t have any plans so I decided to drive home and surprise you”

“How long are you here” I asked finally releasing him

“Till Sunday” he said “so you have 3 whole days to remind me why I choose to go to UC Berkeley”

“Ha ha, very funny” I said “you are wrong though because I am going to ask mom and dad if I can go to LA tomorrow to find a dress for prom”

“Wow, I can’t believe you are getting ready for prom. I still can’t believe you are a senior. In my head you’re still my little sister in piggy tails” he said

I slapped his arm “I never wore piggy tails. At least not willingly”

We both laughed and heard the front door opening. I whispered in his ear “do mom and dad know you are home yet?”

“Nope” he whispered back.

“Go and hide behind the pantry door” I whispered as I heard my mom ask how my day was.

“Theek he mom. Just busy kyo ke graduation awn dhe ya” I said (Trans: It was okay. Just busy because graduation is almost here)

As I was talking both of them had walked into the kitchen facing me with the pantry behind them.

“I have a surprise for you both” I said, smiling.

“Ke ya” my dad asked, looking at me almost suspiciously

“It’s in the pantry” I said.

They both looked at me suspiciously and walked over the pantry to open it. Before they could, Jack jumped out and yelled surprised. Jack and I both laughed when our parents jumped and stepped back.

My mom leaned over to give Jack a hug and smiled saying that it was a nice surprise.

Seeing that my parents were in such a good mood, I decided to take advantage of it and ask them about the LA trip.

“Mom, I have a question. Can I go to LA with Merry and a few other girls to go look for prom dresses” I said

Before my mom could say anything, dad interrupted and said “Nehey. Too LA kalhe ne jana. Bohot dangerous ya” (trans; you are not going to LA alone. It’s too dangerous)

I started to say something and he interrupted “Rory, I don’t want to hear about it. You are young, a girl and most importantly you are Indian. Indian girls don’t go skipping off to LA all alone for no reason”

Before I could say anything Jack interrupted and said “Dad it’s not for no reason. She wants to go get a dress. And I know that to you it’s nothing. But to save an argument from happening two minutes after I got home, I will go to LA with Ror and her friends”

“Okay” daddy said.

I looked at Jack in gratitude because even though I was angry that they were making me take Jack along like I was two, I was still happy that at least I got to go.

I left Jack talking with mom and dad and went to my room to get ready for work. I texted the girls to let them know that I could go and to tell them that Jack was going to come along”

A second later I got a text message from Merry “Omg Jack is coming? Great now I’m going to be a mess the whole time”

I laughed because I knew, like everyone else but Jack that Merry had a huge crush on him…
