Ek hoor Kudi (Trans: Another girl)

My mind was immediately flooded with questions as I struggled to process the new twist to the drama that was fast becoming my life. At first I thought that Jack was joking but one look at his face told me otherwise. Numbly I got up and went over to where I had left my phone on the counter and texted Kevin, before I could talk myself out of it. “I need to ask you something and I need you to answer me truthfully. No lies and no avoidance. I know that Kayla is back in town and going to USC now. Someone just told me that Kayla said that you guys were dating again. Are you?”


After I sent the message I took my phone and went to sit on the couch and stared out the window. A minute later I got a text back from Kevin and after staring at it for a moment, I opened it. “What? Where did you hear that? I’m not dating Kayla. I know that she is back in town but I’m not dating her. The only times I’ve seen her is when we hung out the 1st week that she was back”

I quickly texted him back “I don’t know how much I believe you because why would Kayla say you guys were dating when you weren’t. Something had to have happened to get her the idea that there was a chance of you guys getting back together”.

As I waited for him to text me back, I talked to Jack about things we had to do that day and tried to keep my mind off of it. Suddenly I realized that it had been almost 10 minutes since I had texted him and was starting to think that he wasn’t going to reply when my phone beeped. I looked at it and saw that it was from Kevin and opened it. “Ror, I need you to read the whole message before you get pissed off okay. The truth is that when Kayla first came back we hung out a lot. We also flirted and thought about getting back together. Then about a week and a half after she’d moved back here, we went to a bar, got drunk and ended up going back to her apartment and had sex. The next morning, I realized what a mistake it had been and left before she woke up and I haven’t talked to her since”

To say that I was shocked would have been an understatement. After the shock started wearing off, I started getting angry to the point where I was shaking. Suddenly I needed to get out of the house because I felt like I was suffocating. I grabbed my wallet and keys and told Jack that I would be back in an hour so we could go to the Gurdawara and left.

I got in my car and just started driving, not knowing exactly where I was going. A short time later, I realized that I was heading towards Kevin’s apartment and was about to turn around when I realized that I needed to talk to him face to face.

A few minutes later, I parked in the parking lot and walked to his apartment. I knocked on the door and was startled when it was opened almost instantly by Caleb, Kevin’s roommate, who looked just as startled.

Caleb recovered first “Hey! How are you? I haven’t seen you in so long”

I smiled as I gave him a hug and said “Yea I know it’s been way too long. But in my defense I’ve been super busy with classes and work. But what’s your defense?”

He laughed and pulled me close to him and with his arm around my waist, led me into the apartment. “Me defense” he said “is that I’ve also been busy with classes, work and Katie”

“Katie?” I repeated interested “just who is this Katie?”

“Katie is my…my girlfriend” he said, his face going red.

“Girlfriend! Wow, she must be super woman because I never thought that day would come” I said teasingly

His face going an even deeper shade of red, he just nodded.

“So when do I get to meet this Katie, the wonder woman” I said

During this conversation we had been making our way into the apartment and had just walked into the living room when I finished my last sentence. Sitting in the couch was a girl who strangely reminded me of myself. She was about “5’6” with long dark hair, brown skin and the traditional almond shaped black Indian eyes.

I looked from her to Caleb and he grinned and nodded towards her “Rory this is Katie, and Katie this is Rory one of my oldest and most irritating friends”

I poked my elbow in his ribs and he winced and got out of the way. I smiled at Katie and we all sat down. We immediately clicked because we had a lot in common and I knew that I could be really good friends with this girl. After a few minutes, I remember what I had come to the apartment for and asked Caleb where Kevin was.

Suddenly looking really uncomfortable Caleb shrugged and said “I don’t know. He left about an hour and a half ago without saying anything”

My overactive instinct was telling me there was more to the story when Katie, looking slightly confused said “didn’t he leave with that girl? Kallie or Kayla or something like that was here name”

“Kayla” I said “Her name is Kayla”

Katie looked at my face and must have understood that something was up because she glanced at Caleb and said “Can you please run to my car and get bag for me”

Caleb was about to refuse when the look on Katie’s face changed his mind and he mutely left the room.

Katie looked thoughtful and unsure as she said “I know that we literally just met but you look like you need a friend right now. If you don’t mind telling me what’s wrong, maybe a new perspective might just be what you need”

When I didn’t say anything for a minute, Katie looked at me and said “I’m not sure but something is telling me that this has something to do with Kevin. And from little comments that have been dropped and things that I have heard in the past couple months, I’m going to guess that you and Kevin have something going on…?”

I nearly broke down at her words and suddenly, I was spilling everything. I told her the whole Kevin and Rory story, from start to current time and then slowly lapsed into silence.

A few minutes later Katie said “I don’t know if I should be the one telling you this but since Caleb has disappeared, I will. Kevin…Kevin has been dating Kayla. Well I don’t know about dating but he’s definitely been sleeping with her a few times a week because it seems to be like she’s here every time I come…”

This is a picture of the Darbar Sahib (also known as The Golden Temple) in Amritsar, Punjab, India. The Darbar Shabin is a Gurdawara which is a place of worship. This one happens to be one of the most importland places in the world for Sikh's and it is always very crowded. I personally haven't had a chance to go since I was 10 years old because I haven't been back to India since we moved here, sadly.
