Eh Meri Zindagi Ya (Trans: this is what my life's like)

As I was doing homework later that day, I got a text message from Kevin saying “I’m sorry.” I didn’t reply back to him and a few minutes later I got another message from him saying “I said I’m sorry so can you please forgive me”. Slightly amused I texted him back saying “do you even know what you’re apologizing for?”

Almost immediately he texted me back saying “honestly, no. But I don’t know that you are upset about something that happened in the comp. lab and I’m guessing that I was something I said/did. So I’m sorry”.

“You didn’t do anything, Kev. I’m just in a weird mood today” I texted back.

A minute later he texted back and said “Okay. Do you want to hang out? We can go to Rally’s and you can bring your books so your parents think your studying”

I looked at my phone for a few minutes thinking if I really wanted to see him today. “Okay, let me ask if I can go to Rally’s. But we should actually study for the test in pre-calc, k”. I went downstairs to ask my mom if I could go to Rally’s and found her sitting with my dad talking on the phone. Listening for a few seconds, I realized they were talking to my grandmother in India and tried to quietly slip away before they could see me. Before I could leave, my dad looked up and saw me. Motioning me over, he told my grandmother “Ah Rawinder na gal kar lo” (Here talk to Rory). Signing I grabbed the phone from him and said “Sat Shi Akal, biji. Ke haal ya? Me ve theek ya. Ah loo daddy na gaal kar lo” (Hi, how are you. I’m good. Here’s talk to daddy). I quickly gave the phone back to him and grabbed my mom’s hand to pull her away so I could ask her.

“Can I go to Rally’s to study, mom?” I asked

“What are you going to be studying and who are you going with?” she asked

“I have a test in pre-calc tomorrow and I’m going to be there with Merry and a few other people from class” I said.

She looked at me as if trying to see if I was lying and said “okay. Its 5 right now so be home by 9 at the latest”

“Okay” I said. “I’m going to get a ride from Jack okay”

She nodded and went back to the couch to sit with my dad. I went upstairs and knocked in Jack’s door and went in when he answered. “Can I get a ride to Rally’s” I asked.

He glanced up at me and said “did you ask mom or dad”

“Yeah, I did and they said okay” I said.

“Okay give me a few minutes. I was going to out anyways in a little while but I can leave now” he said.

I went back to my room and texted Kevin “I can come. See you there in twenty”

“Okay’ he texted back.

A moment later another texted from him “oh and Kallie’s coming with me, k”

A jolt went through my body when I saw that. Kallie is a good friend of mine who Kevin has a huge crush on. She’d been in a relationship for about 8 months but broke up with her boyfriend about 3 months ago and was now single and loving it. I also knew that Kallie had a thing for Kevin as well.

My phone lit up again and this time it was a text from Kallie “OMG, Kevin asked me to go to Rally’s with you guys. He’s never done that before. Usually when you guys are studying for pre-calc it’s just the 2 of you”

And she was right. Up until that day, whenever we studied for math, it was just Kevin and I.

What did it mean that he had invited her…?

  1. AAACK! How annoying! It's like one step forward, two steps back! You want to tell him how you feel but if he's going with another girl... That's a terrible position!
