After Will hung up his phone, we just stared at each other for a moment in shock. Then we silently grabbed our shoes and bags and ran to the car. Even though Will drove fast, it still took us almost an hour to hospital they’d had been taken to. We burst into the hospital and ran into the emergency waiting room and found everyone there. As soon as Merry saw me, she ran over to me and we stood there, in our prom finery, hugging and crying. After a couple minutes, I let go of Merry and glanced around the room to see Kayla’s parents there but not Kevin’s.
“Where are Kevin’s parents?” I asked the room in general
“I tried to get a hold of them” Merry said “but no one picked up the phone at their house and none of us have their cell phone numbers.
“They aren’t home, this weekend” I said, as I looked for my phone and then realized that I didn’t have my purse, which had my phone “They knew that Kevin was spending the weekend at Jacob’s (Merry’s boyfriend) so they decided to take a weekend trip to San Francisco”
Frustrated, I turned to look at Will but he was already walking towards me with my purse “I saw you run out of the car without it” he said “and figured you would probably need it, so I grabbed”
I smiled my thanks to him and ripped open the small evening bag and grabbed my phone. “I have Kevin’s mom, Sherry’s cell phone number” I said as I finally found it in my contacts list. I saw that I only had a couple bars in the room “I’m going to run outside and call them and let them know okay”
Without being asked, Will followed me out of the ER. It was nice to feel his presence beside me as I called Sherry’s and told her the news. She was understandably panicking and told me that they would be there as soon as possible.
Will looked at me and said “it's going to be okay. They are both going to be fine” and put his arms around me.
After a minute, we headed back inside and told everyone assembled there that Kevin’s parents were on their way. I found Kayla’s parents and gave them both a hug and asked “how are they? Do you know anything yet?”
Kayla’s mom, Mrs. Knells looked at me with worried eyes and said “when we got here, the police told us that Kayla was unconscious when they brought her in and there was a lot of blood but they aren’t sure if the blood was from her or Kevin”
“Do you know anything about Kevin?” I asked hopefully, but she shook her head and said “only that he was unconscious as well. Since we aren’t his parents, they won’t tell us anything about him”
I got up and went to the corner of the room and sat down. A minute later, Will joined me and I leaned my head on his shoulder “I am so scared, Will. What if something happens to them? What if something happens to him?”
Will kissed my head and whispered in my ear “everything is going to be okay”
We sat there for what seemed like hours but were probably only 10 minutes or so when I heard someone call my name. I looked up and saw a police officer standing there.
“Yes?” I said, getting to my feet
“Are you Ms. Kaur?” he asked
“Yes, I am” I answered, a feeling of dread creeping into my stomach
The young officer, who looked like he would rather be anywhere else then here at the moment, cleared his throat and said “You are listed as an emergency contact for Kevin Robins. The doctor said that he would like to speak to you and to the parents of a Kayla Knells”
Taking a deep breath I said “Okay” and looked behind me to see Kayla’s parents waiting for us to join them. The officer led us into a different, smaller waiting room and we sat down. A second later, I was up again, too impatient and nervous to sit down.
I heard the door opening and spun around. Two doctors came in, an older guy and a younger guy. The older doctor spoke to Kayla’s parents and asked them “Are you Ms. Knell’s family?” When they nodded, he quietly started talking to them.
The younger guy came towards me and said “I’m Dr. Green, are you Ms. Kaur?”
I nervous to speak, I simply nodded.
“Now I normally couldn’t tell you anything but we were finally able to contact Mr. Robin’s parents and they cleared it for you to be told what is going on.” He looked at me for conformation and when I nodded continued “Mr. Robins has a severe concussion and has slipped into a coma and-“
Before he continued, he looked at me and I must have gone as pale as I left because he grabbed my arm and gently pushed me into a chair. “Are you okay” he asked
“Yes, I’m fine doctor. Please continue” I said with a trembling voice
He looked at me for a moment more before continuing “he also has a broken right leg, a fractured left wrist and 5 broken ribs. One of the ribs punctured one of his lungs which collapsed. We took him into emergency surgery to repair the lung and it seems to be fine for now and he has been transferred into the ICU”
The doctor asked me if I had a question and answered all the ones I could think of. When he was finished he escorted me out of the now empty waiting room, because Kayla’s parents had already left.
When I walked back into the other waiting room where everyone else was waiting, they all looked up at me and I lost it.
I burst into tears and Merry rushed over to me…
That's sooo sad
ReplyDeleteWhat about Kayla??? Wow. Wonder how it all happened? Those are some serious injuries. mum
ReplyDeleteI was going to write about Kayla's injuries on this post too but I ran out of space. This was already a really long post. And the injuries I'm discribing in this post are injuries that a friend of mine actually had when he got hit by a drunk driver. In that case, the drunk driver T-boned him and he fell down a ditch and hit a tree as well. I thank god, he survived.
